Hey! I am Jake. I started Fireproof Ministries with Craig back in 1998. We have known each other since I was in 7th grade. I speak on behalf of the ministry several times a year and I write on the pastors blog. I spoke at a church in Chandler, Arizona last weekend. I was asked to share a message the day before to a group of sex offenders in prison. I called Craig a few days before and asked him what do I say to this group? I know XXXchurch has done outreach before in prison but I had never done this. Over the next couple of days I will be sharing this experience.

Do some of the most hated people in the world deserve the encouragement of God’s grace? As I walked into the Florence Jail and headed to speak to the Sex Offenders yard I was excited, as strange at that sounds. I was excited to step into a maximum security prison and come face to face with people who have made mistakes that will forever separate them from society. They are the outcasts. The sins of these men will bring even the most compassionate person to experience emotions contrary to their life. Read more at the XXXchurch blog.

First off, how do you know what you believe is what is biblical and Holy Spirit-based? Studying it yourself is the only way to know and that is the beauty of the printing press. If you are the kind of person that believes what you hear without finding the source, then you might take what Rob Bell says as bible. But, I don’t think that is ever his purpose. He finds his purpose in asking the tough questions.

So what if the good news is more about God’s love in Jesus than fear of an eternal punishment? Why does it matter? When you want people to know God’s love, it’s because Jesus is life, light and truth. What happens in eternity has never been a provable thing. God knows the human heart way better than we could even know our own heart! For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double edged sword, penetrating even to divide soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

And who is the word? The word of God is Jesus! In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.  (John 1)

Do you need the threat of eternal punishment to obey God? The church flounders in disobedience so I kind of don’t think so. And I’m not down on the church. I just mean the church looks alot like the world with disobedience rampant.

What is hell, regardless of where or considering fire, if not total separation from God, love and redemption? Even if it were only for a short time, who wants that?

Let your faith in Jesus be your own. Fall in love with God today and you won’t need eternal punishment to obey and you will tell everyone about His love. You won’t be able to contain yourself, mainly because it’s not your”Self” anymore, but the living, active word of God living in you. Now that is GOOD NEWS!

For me, it all comes down to fruit. I know many Christians that live as if consistently attending church services, tithing and perhaps volunteering a few times a month is the abundant life for which Jesus died and conquered death. I find that way of life empty and extremely contradictory to Jesus’ example. Then, I find foul-mouthed, fornicaters sharing their lives with the homeless, opening their homes and giving out of their meager wages. Then, I find out that the pastor of XXXChurch.com used to attend Mars Hill Church where Rob Bell pastors. XXXChurch.com is doing more to set the captives free in the darkest domains of society than any of the local churches in the US. And in their newsletter sent out recently, XXXChurch.com said the door most closed to their ministry is the local church. And yet 50% of males (and a growing number of females) struggle with porn, making it a pretty relevant issue to address.

So here’s my question: If you believe in hell, what is hell? And how do you know what you know about hell? Have you studied the Hebrew, the Greek? Have you wondered?

What IF what you’ve been taught has been passed down and down and down until it’s not even the original intent? What if you’ve missed the point? Would you be willing to admit it?

Don’t we say God’s message is redemptive love, but teach fear as an underlying principle?
